Manchester Airport train station in lockdown as bomb squad head to scene
All trains to the airport have been suspended and a man detained
A man has been detained with Manchester Airport train station evacuated over a “suspicious package”.
Police dog units have been sighted at the station and a bomb disposal team are heading to the scene.
Trains have been suspended while bus and Metrolink services have been affected.
An airport spokesman confirmed an area surrounding the train station has been evacuated.
A police statement read: "Officers are currently responding to reports of a suspicious package at Manchester Airport transport interchange.
"Further enquiries are being carried out and bomb disposal officers are on their way to assist with these enquiries.
"A man has been detained by police at the scene. A cordon is in place at Manchester Airport transport interchange and people are encouraged to follow directions from officers.
"Trams, trains and buses are currently suspended to and from the airport interchange. Thank you for your patience as we respond to this."
A witness said: "There are police everywhere, lots of armed police and ambulances.
“There are lots of police and unmarked vehicles as well.
“The train station is also an office building, nobody is being allowed into work.
“People are confused they thought it was to do with Thomas Cook initially.”
Travellers in the area say they have seen police and dog units in the area.
One person tweeted that they have been unable to get into the station.
They said: "Any idea what’s going on at Manchester Airport my friends have landed and been told they can’t go into the railway station as it’s been evacuated.”
In a statement Metrolink said: "Due to a police incident at Manchester Airport, services on the Manchester Airport line will only operate from Victoria - Wythenshawe town centre."
